The walk started at my apartment, involved some beer drinking at Belgium Cafe, and ended at The Dandelion where we crashed tea and boozed instead.<br />The tour was dictated by Emily who spent the first few years of her life in Fairmount and hasn't spent too much time there since. She was literally taking me down memory lane.<br /></div><br /><br /><div align="center">Here are some images from out walk </div><br /><br /><div align="center"></div><br /><br /><div align="center"></div><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601912582802024802" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM-sV0me0ux0jkIeie8RprBss2IkhPBeg8QRJVWCBuD9cnceMEvlCRm1A-ZB3d3jv8ZupQQM9YI9Uco3pTmj8qGU3VUtr_pss3muf3Izqv2ZrfElczzmfc71vX7S2R3B2kwWdtIf4WoLY/s400/IMG_0129.JPG" /> <br /><p align="center">A mural by <a href="http://obeygiant.com/">Shepard Fairey</a><br /></p><br /><p align="center">I have no idea how we got lucky enough to have one of these so close to our front door (its located on 26th and Girard), but let's take a closer look:<br /><br /></p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN5FF-3T4axhSR8bwcWPv5W8bvLDj1Y6Cy09XeuKTyseKvVaSNCo9eNqkafqwHS8_ipzUjZ-iuqc1_NBWBbp1_wUZ9nbPliSxbZsgNCCD5q0ooFGVFEE8JPGL-0Id8EdrQvDb6ITC_tmc/s1600/IMG_0131.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 299px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601912443545969042" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN5FF-3T4axhSR8bwcWPv5W8bvLDj1Y6Cy09XeuKTyseKvVaSNCo9eNqkafqwHS8_ipzUjZ-iuqc1_NBWBbp1_wUZ9nbPliSxbZsgNCCD5q0ooFGVFEE8JPGL-0Id8EdrQvDb6ITC_tmc/s400/IMG_0131.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3_VNvLmjBAJolqof3FCZEA9HUCnDT5YFJgSkxeI-bY7ASEG5IOfjFlYrfuHf9KtYgI4JyUhQCVVU7L22fWRSc1bQVaDs0jxyacs55akwdo2NG01MwrY31Yv1l0VAxKw1aeXIBumOYCmQ/s1600/IMG_0132.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 299px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601912435025711266" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3_VNvLmjBAJolqof3FCZEA9HUCnDT5YFJgSkxeI-bY7ASEG5IOfjFlYrfuHf9KtYgI4JyUhQCVVU7L22fWRSc1bQVaDs0jxyacs55akwdo2NG01MwrY31Yv1l0VAxKw1aeXIBumOYCmQ/s400/IMG_0132.JPG" /></a> </div><br /><div align="center">love it<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-mdx5XBpuqzxsWyHP8D3VIMf7X65TEsNtOR8PSjGQ7_n7Nnesg-LlOHHy14vqS5829d3oAHzCH5bZww9zwFupcilBukjXUONN7yThuoUmH3iez7ox4ZWuhXe-Ec4UruHA-EE3wTpV9dU/s1600/IMG_0133.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 299px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601912426970154306" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-mdx5XBpuqzxsWyHP8D3VIMf7X65TEsNtOR8PSjGQ7_n7Nnesg-LlOHHy14vqS5829d3oAHzCH5bZww9zwFupcilBukjXUONN7yThuoUmH3iez7ox4ZWuhXe-Ec4UruHA-EE3wTpV9dU/s400/IMG_0133.JPG" /></a> Part of a mural by Isaiah Zagar<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsnVXBqy0hAWGjuUjEitRqGpF2PoR_cmErBmn-R1jawk-NyFZb4li8MdHKXz7fABtUJkDoKKbVqOVIQHf-J9pxq_ZULbFPXVZ0ryFKkklC7zcdcXE_uPgo2DIE6aQQPuZoLnoMzI8MFd8/s1600/IMG_0134.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 299px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601912426321833522" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsnVXBqy0hAWGjuUjEitRqGpF2PoR_cmErBmn-R1jawk-NyFZb4li8MdHKXz7fABtUJkDoKKbVqOVIQHf-J9pxq_ZULbFPXVZ0ryFKkklC7zcdcXE_uPgo2DIE6aQQPuZoLnoMzI8MFd8/s400/IMG_0134.JPG" /></a>another part: I love how he incorporate broken bits of trash into his art<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRCVVXRy7Szp7kVNiJHaGZ7JG7vj6TzjOqe9t6L9gvo0opouuWwj3kK1gPQD4yp1DkWlQh543IeTNEcN5AjZ2bnII6XxyXCWQ9d2He-hvoIrgQBmd9_FKP7CtRndBX89EwKFLcTlLPjqM/s1600/IMG_0135.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 299px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601912419118256018" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRCVVXRy7Szp7kVNiJHaGZ7JG7vj6TzjOqe9t6L9gvo0opouuWwj3kK1gPQD4yp1DkWlQh543IeTNEcN5AjZ2bnII6XxyXCWQ9d2He-hvoIrgQBmd9_FKP7CtRndBX89EwKFLcTlLPjqM/s400/IMG_0135.JPG" /></a> Deviled eggs at <a href="http://www.thedandelionpub.com/">The Dandelion</a>. I however, have a few different routes that take me to work everyday that take me by some amazing murals. Here are three that I love. Unfortunatly the quality isn't amazing since I took them from my iphone while in my car on cloudy days...but work with me, ok?<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEip-kazE1H5xcox5ofsn3NbKIK7qWx_YlH5E7vtaG50PNfM6dV9bgbQjfr_7bGzB8Es0ej7-8Pgoi4GnYpavMrdUBfzNd5h-_HscNsVdeTFcJeonVgVpmYSsJ2m6Isn6DdaJV4HeFEadbk/s1600/IMG_0116.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 326px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5599265890560065042" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEip-kazE1H5xcox5ofsn3NbKIK7qWx_YlH5E7vtaG50PNfM6dV9bgbQjfr_7bGzB8Es0ej7-8Pgoi4GnYpavMrdUBfzNd5h-_HscNsVdeTFcJeonVgVpmYSsJ2m6Isn6DdaJV4HeFEadbk/s400/IMG_0116.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNjQtJ39nS8b7Qq8acUpGWpYYA8Y52mkwziADd61xVtvRF8okDwPlo0c6tR8Jwkyci01v7CrFX8kpMg6mvY_MWkOhJWKEyrhtV_kZyNMWRIbC10IWF7b5ZLap4gf5Xvs9bhQZeaVGI6Og/s1600/IMG_0114.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5599265887071841698" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNjQtJ39nS8b7Qq8acUpGWpYYA8Y52mkwziADd61xVtvRF8okDwPlo0c6tR8Jwkyci01v7CrFX8kpMg6mvY_MWkOhJWKEyrhtV_kZyNMWRIbC10IWF7b5ZLap4gf5Xvs9bhQZeaVGI6Og/s400/IMG_0114.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIXzuNGvq1_up9oepSAf4UQdCyyW0Y-FkrLgo_B7CMNhwMF_lPm2ZU8gm_yTEfwjRS21XG0uFc-dzMAANbD16bRuK01JTJfSLGxEdqQhJJuFOLvsByfxi9Rdoauh_z3HsBTtSf9aaa9uE/s1600/IMG_0122.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 244px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5599265888966504002" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIXzuNGvq1_up9oepSAf4UQdCyyW0Y-FkrLgo_B7CMNhwMF_lPm2ZU8gm_yTEfwjRS21XG0uFc-dzMAANbD16bRuK01JTJfSLGxEdqQhJJuFOLvsByfxi9Rdoauh_z3HsBTtSf9aaa9uE/s400/IMG_0122.JPG" /></a><br />this last one is my favorite, and so powerful<br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div></div>Juliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05616749566413260365noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6660340805811337716.post-46426373429938401522011-04-24T14:13:00.000-07:002011-04-24T14:19:16.061-07:00Mural Near Drexel's Campus and Spring Garden BridgeI passed this lovely mural on the way home from playing Frisbee at 38th and Filbert a few weeks ago. The <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_2" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">cook off</span> featured 12 different <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_3" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">chillies</span> from local vendors and <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_4" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">caterers</span>. The selection was varied and I was amazing at the different varieties of chili! Its flavors were so intense that I wished I hadn't tried it first. Afterwards, I tried some very excellent <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_8" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">chilies</span> of the more traditional brand that just couldn't stand up to it and paled in comparison. <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_9" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">Equalling</span> this fine chili was none other than the <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_10" class="blsp-spelling-error">poblano</span> green chili. Its chef kept his beans on the side. He served up a mean dish of baked beans with ham next to the <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_11" class="blsp-spelling-error">poblano</span> chili sprinkled with chips and some type of red pepper corn. It was very different and very amazing. The baked beans alone could have won a prize, and along side the spicy <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_12" class="blsp-spelling-error">poblano</span> green chili it was a match made in heaven. His chili also took home first place. </div><br /><div align="left">After trying twelve different <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_13" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">chilies</span> (and of course seconds of the pulled pork) Jaime and I somehow managed to split a black bean brownie (not as sensational as its cooks at Food For All claimed it would be but quite moist) we also had room for some cask pale ale from a local brewery. As my blogging skills are a little out of practice I do not remember the name of the brewery. This is unfortunate as the beer was excellent. That was my Argentine Frisbee captain's favorite phrase when he was trying to tell us that in order for us to come close to winning a game we would have to get back to the basics and then work on the fancy stuff. As this long, lonely winter draws to an end I realize that I should be applying the same phrase to my own life here in Philadelphia. Back to the things I love to do, which I really haven't been doing much of. Number one of course should be writing. The few of you out there who check this blog can see I've been doing none of that. I blame it on the lack of interesting things happening in my life, but that's just a sorry excuse, and one I will no longer use. Next are the crafty things I love to do but couldn't afford to do while abroad.<br />Third of all, I'm going to stop saying I don't like Philly. I'm going to say I love it hear 'til I believe it!! Sam and I have made a pact to fall in love with this city of brotherly love by June and its high time I got working on it.<br />This week was a first step in the right direction. Even dingy, post industrial, poor North Philly looks nicer in the sunlight, and plenty of sunlight was on the menu this week. After two weekends in a row in NYC I expected to long for Brooklyn but I was content as I drove to and from work and strolled the familiar (and suddenly cleaner) sidewalks on Girard as I walked from my car to my apartment. Ambitious pedestrians had already got their sandals out, and the day care center on my block was outside playing plastic horse shoes on the sidewalk.<br />I entered my apartment, and threw open the windows and the back door and sat down on my grandmother's old fold out chair and wrote. I kept my speakers silent and listened instead to sirens, the sounds of dirt bikes riding up and down street, and children laughing. <br />That night Josh and I made an amazing dinner for some friends and I didn't complain about Philly once. <br />I've got to admit its gettin' better, a little better, all the time....Juliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05616749566413260365noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6660340805811337716.post-89514874866781198662011-02-21T07:21:00.000-08:002011-02-21T10:17:37.223-08:00Melissa Comes To Visit And We Explore Art And Food In PhillyFinally, my very first out of town visitor came to stay! My friend Melissa flew in all the way from Kentucky to check out the fair city. Its one of the places she could possibly be moving to next year for her PHD in Art History. I did a pretty horrible job of convincing her to move here, but I did show her some good art and provide her with plenty of good food.<br /><br />First we checked out the Barnes Foundation. I thought it might be a special treat for an art lover to catch one last glimpse of Barnes' legacy in it original state. The top floor was closed already for conservation but the bottom floor was full of so many Cezannes and Renoirs not mention the dozens of paintings by equally as famous and important artists from Monet to Seurat and Barnes' extensive collection of keys that I left satisfied. I also left with a dislike for the majority of Renoir's paintings and a greater appreciation of Cezanne.<br /><br />A note on the Barnes Controversy. The Barnes is moving just down the block from me. Barnes' collection is being relocated and reorganized in a big, modern building on the BFP where the Foundation will also offer classes. Many people are against the move because Barnes specifically stated in his instructions that his collection should never be moved and according to my cousin he hated the city. At first I was firmly behind those who stand behind Barnes' last wished, but after further researching the matter (and becoming a member) I am excited for the move. Barnes' philosophy was to bring art of the masses. He had his factory workers take art classes in the factory, and the idea of his museum was to make art accessible. Now that his foundation is running out of money, and given the fact the SEPTA is unreliable and not helping to make the Barnes Foundation accessible to people without a car, I agree that the collection should be moved to a location where it can be enjoyed by all. I only regret that his arrangements of the paintings will probably be lost.<br /><br />The next day we explored a very different museum. On the first Sunday of every month the Philadelphia Art Museum is pay what you want, so we headed over on this sunny afternoon to check out the goods.<br /><br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 300px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5576165312740030882" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrwxlic0lwUpxONAOUKDuNMoVZFaZzNDALLerfe8y6POXDR-nSQwiSvA3p-yr1UKM_Z0Vf7P80XnkPlxH3PFZasc9O_2aPoe7YNbzerVsxmS9Y7d_E6n-yxvLs7oiAk3Fzrfw5QTo8wUA/s400/IMG_7797.JPG" /> <div align="center">very impressive entrance</div><div align="center"><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAIzxpsSBsOEcmA8REg0uAtKGDLSzuEtkbNMbtbRhM-CaXiuu9HUaXyeSAMonNaLteaMHU1eTLhM4x6dudXqqI212ngbOQ8dy_U6eCJvhgwA_pQJvOCLUIMeersbgljmcIUENiIC_sgDY/s1600/IMG_7803.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5576165317180253202" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAIzxpsSBsOEcmA8REg0uAtKGDLSzuEtkbNMbtbRhM-CaXiuu9HUaXyeSAMonNaLteaMHU1eTLhM4x6dudXqqI212ngbOQ8dy_U6eCJvhgwA_pQJvOCLUIMeersbgljmcIUENiIC_sgDY/s400/IMG_7803.JPG" /> <p align="center"></a></p>Klee!<br /><br /><br /><div align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiujB2vZQZ3IVr19t0HEJocM-Da-CB-Z_oGj5vG3Zz5whWvSsdFAENi539cFdBQp90GSpJlLGURiTKgZj3dWo9U7RZDXVAAjxDQLXOBWGM2Tg_NlXtzdZXVif_QeMf0JLj_Kv0YvXpFkLc/s1600/IMG_7805.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5576164413649190578" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiujB2vZQZ3IVr19t0HEJocM-Da-CB-Z_oGj5vG3Zz5whWvSsdFAENi539cFdBQp90GSpJlLGURiTKgZj3dWo9U7RZDXVAAjxDQLXOBWGM2Tg_NlXtzdZXVif_QeMf0JLj_Kv0YvXpFkLc/s400/IMG_7805.JPG" /></a>no trip would be complete without seeing at least one bust of this very important man!</div><div align="center"></div><div align="left">I really enjoyed the museum. There are rooms upon rooms that have been brought over from homes in Europe or England and recreated in the museum with lovely wood paneling, curtains, and even fire places and painted ceilings. After all of this we had worked up a serious appetite and walked down the Parkway named for the bust pictured above to Reading Terminal Market.</div><div align="center"><br /></div><div align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgWRZPP9KixJn2I5aZROz1qKPmZJMV0HA2Mv3mQgL14lBWvXXkD1ObBuyIkocGZqsamlYg6KmOSPyMyB7xwWIwjzF4ktcr_5XxfjnFTWsuGCC62zbgWT50u3tPLh75-WVWZqSqqez8JyM/s1600/IMG_7815.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5576164404403703618" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgWRZPP9KixJn2I5aZROz1qKPmZJMV0HA2Mv3mQgL14lBWvXXkD1ObBuyIkocGZqsamlYg6KmOSPyMyB7xwWIwjzF4ktcr_5XxfjnFTWsuGCC62zbgWT50u3tPLh75-WVWZqSqqez8JyM/s400/IMG_7815.JPG" /></a> we took in one more bit of art on the way!</div><div align="center"></div><div align="left">At Reading, we were of course overwhelmed by options, but eventually settled on Hershel's Deli. The number one reason this weekend was that she invited me to see Two Door Cinema Club at <a href="http://www.thetroc.com/">Trocadero Theatre</a>.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.thetroc.com/]"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 300px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5565512162643416962" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_ftEeptmtcUQu1yGkF7eBLLQ8qML1qQQVtV9JKdSjyDmnSbd7eBJ54Fxgjt76SB7iUvb9HqhsyTr3Mkk0w73E3x8ZnepTwpD8MnTVjmTvKE7r86Ia9Q2kWRG_tHHbfDqfp_ouqZDJ6L4/s400/IMG_7133.JPG" /></a>More familiarly known as The Troc, this venue is one of the coolest places I've been since I moved here. Its an old theatre with a beautiful balcony that is for 21+ and a dance floor below for the young at heart.<br /><br /><div align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju79C2YsiRhIfedzkiOO4gMmHFE_hhTEeBLX_2VFfzjNTCwdaOs3AMd2DdeVizmA-3Um85CE25nuC9IxqgLLeEY1t37JphK5L02KfSQBr1RtWipsaA5MMatJLtcICa7PtaHk3IT9bQmfM/s1600/IMG_7139.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5565512174257576354" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju79C2YsiRhIfedzkiOO4gMmHFE_hhTEeBLX_2VFfzjNTCwdaOs3AMd2DdeVizmA-3Um85CE25nuC9IxqgLLeEY1t37JphK5L02KfSQBr1RtWipsaA5MMatJLtcICa7PtaHk3IT9bQmfM/s400/IMG_7139.JPG" /></a> the view from above<br /><br /><br /><div align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhceu71ghE-Ahy0j7-iX661LcRHqAK3x-0LalXwGDl-r1q4a-Y_zvOX8KH5P3hhJZt9MPmibVeF16VcO1oEK29zum8yYwXcOzORNtjGGNUhI4HSD4pAf2KXb64q_xF7ps-Fdq37eH5lHFQ/s1600/IMG_7138.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5565512169349994914" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhceu71ghE-Ahy0j7-iX661LcRHqAK3x-0LalXwGDl-r1q4a-Y_zvOX8KH5P3hhJZt9MPmibVeF16VcO1oEK29zum8yYwXcOzORNtjGGNUhI4HSD4pAf2KXb64q_xF7ps-Fdq37eH5lHFQ/s400/IMG_7138.JPG" /></a> Em and I squatting to get a view of Tokyo Police Club</div><div align="center"></div><div align="left"></div><div align="left"></div><div align="left"></div><div align="left"> <br /><br /></div><div align="left">Two Door Cinema Club was fun, especially considering I'd never heard the music before. This group of handsome (ok, hott), talented Irish lads rocked the stage with their sweet voices and on point percussion. Their beat was good enough to dance to but their music has more of a poppy feel that only rock from across the pond can pull off without being cheesy or too teeny boppery. The show started off a little slow but every song got better and better and when the asked the crowd if we were ready to dance (most of us already were) they kicked it up a notch. The drummer out of his seat for most of the rest of the show as he threw his whole body into each note. People around us really were going pretty crazy, singing along and all that. Suffice it to say, I happily dropped $10 for their CD and I will be listening to it on the way to work tomorrow.<br /><br /></div><div align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg27EU0xQy69Crr04dpI9DTre8aSWT2XDkJGUY2UEhPuERcocDc9_DbLHt7kcX8r-Z5E0JPipT2Y3dcIki1wtXZ5g9kRxOwjnqLO-O8gPvvhTBu8SIBTCp_REmBEhWXAcX5FpYITHMFF3Y/s1600/IMG_7135.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5565512162651715506" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg27EU0xQy69Crr04dpI9DTre8aSWT2XDkJGUY2UEhPuERcocDc9_DbLHt7kcX8r-Z5E0JPipT2Y3dcIki1wtXZ5g9kRxOwjnqLO-O8gPvvhTBu8SIBTCp_REmBEhWXAcX5FpYITHMFF3Y/s400/IMG_7135.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheYYKhBhQX-7PC4xybvBZCax5iLyDMgtR805hoV_9ELp0Sigb6eW_eEQeikfQAY0i7YqUhGUo95LeLHlxEAZNLW9023WN6ycYuiOz-kTUn8KRv1byF_QEtb5y6PSgqFDNrt3xvTn9WE50/s1600/IMG_7141.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5565514596023751634" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheYYKhBhQX-7PC4xybvBZCax5iLyDMgtR805hoV_9ELp0Sigb6eW_eEQeikfQAY0i7YqUhGUo95LeLHlxEAZNLW9023WN6ycYuiOz-kTUn8KRv1byF_QEtb5y6PSgqFDNrt3xvTn9WE50/s400/IMG_7141.JPG" /></a> Troc employee slacking off and watching Tokyo Police Club and their lead singer's very long legs<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /></div></div>Juliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05616749566413260365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6660340805811337716.post-66319289664875798402011-01-20T18:55:00.000-08:002011-01-20T18:58:19.140-08:00Nuclear Snow FallThe last big snow fall we had came with some very gray skies which reflected the yellow lights of the city. The effect was eerie as it came with an unprecedented silence and the next morning was followed by incessant sirens. As we stood in the doorway to out "balcony" we were facinated by the scene. We tried to capture it. It wasn't as orange in real life, but I call it:<br /><br /><div align="center">Nuclear Snow Fall<br /></div><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 299px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5564467484834867394" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_h2ZssmIYp2lz-o6_pJk6PLWAM5cnBZQ8KNqpGyqDJjsMrBxj7cvGwu2RhYlPU2nh4GYu0xq2pU71bi-6Sefmig1isY3vW8Z0EtIkuwuerF3ll_0V2615Ldc3M0bpHKy0r8tAgm3WXCw/s400/photo.JPG" />Juliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05616749566413260365noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6660340805811337716.post-27081013813188472812010-12-30T15:59:00.001-08:002010-12-30T16:37:30.798-08:00MADE YOU LOOKI would have walked past Made You Look (2601 Pennsylvania Ave, 215-593-0075), but the big sidewalk sign caught my attention and I noticed that this giant apartment building I was walking buy contained some retail to relish. At Lickety Split on Forth and South, that's where. I spend some quality after work hours there with a few new friends. I filled up on pizza and beer and still had money left over for a cab ride home. On Saturdays they have live music upstairs and on Sunday a comedy show. I wouldn't head all the way over to South Street to experience the establishment first hand, but if you ever happen to be over there and find yourself hankering for a beer and some pizza you will not be disappointed.Juliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05616749566413260365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6660340805811337716.post-77857199533265113412010-11-18T19:11:00.000-08:002010-11-18T19:17:11.418-08:00Fairmount FlingTomorrow night is the 8th annual Fairmount Fling! For $35 dollars you can taste food from over 20 local restaurants, involve yourself in some sort of auction, and drink free beer and wine. More importantly you can finally infiltrate the walls of Girard College!!! The nagging thought "What goes on in there?" will no longer need haunt you every time you drive by it!! No really, the even sounds cool. Its $35 in advance and $45 at the door. The money benifits the Fairmount CDC. It sounds like you can make dinner out of it. I am not sure if I will be attending or not, but check it out for yourself at <a href="http://fairmountcdc.org/events/fairmount-fling/">http://fairmountcdc.org/events/fairmount-fling/</a>.Juliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05616749566413260365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6660340805811337716.post-6380406673193727362010-11-18T18:50:00.000-08:002010-11-18T19:10:01.975-08:00Out of PhillyOK, I know...not so good at the blogging while working full time thing. It was amazing to spend time with my old gang, and even to spend time with a gang in general!! Here in Philly my social life hasn't quite reached the levels I've previously achieved in life. Then again, if you are reading this you already know that. The rally was good fun and the weather was amazing. Halloween was disastrous and fun and I only got into one fight in Spanish with a drunk Puerto Rican over my use of her bathroom... I guess she'll think twice before she calls some random white girl a puta again...and I'll think twice before I use someone's bathroom before introducing myself. Lessons learned...</div><div align="left">And then there was our glamorous trip to London. We arrived Thursday morning and took in as many sights as possible until Saturday morning when we went to Chiswick (pronounced Chisick)<br />to meet Raymond and his family. Raymond was my dad's dad's first cousin. When my grandfather was working on the bunkers that would eventually help keep the Nazis out of Egypt he would come stay at Raymond's house in Alexandria over the weekends. We heard many stories about that lost time and got acquainted with his wife, and his daughter and her family who hosted us. Unfortunately he didn't know very much about my grandmother or the people in her pictures that we had questions about, however, it was amazing to meet them and to know that I have family in London!!</div><div align="left">I also fell in love with London and can't wait to one day go back. This coming weekend I will be in NYC on Sat for a birthday dinner for my sis, but Friday night promises some adventure. Also, I've got my camera charger here now, so expect pictures!!!<br /><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF6B0mNdEn5xnl29pbq5zUpYb9SY6Pfh4b7he48qbFEaX2yIPqu0me4brbZ8kU2q4oQxlDP3FzJ2BrCExF6wl0bh17CB8v6LMfOlrPgEAWs4FF5AhcdnoXK-Ourq2FdwjoDoQGY0K4ZX4/s1600/photo%255B2%255D.JPG"></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /></div>Juliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05616749566413260365noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6660340805811337716.post-88782593776785095612010-11-06T08:22:00.001-07:002010-11-06T08:24:55.891-07:00Flea Market Moves Indoors!!!!!<div align="center">Spring Garden Indoor Antique & Vintage Flea Market<br />This Saturday, November 6th<br />Indoors At 9th & Spring Garden<br />Formally Fed Ex Service Center<br />(Use 820 Spring Garden St. 19123 For GPS Directions)<br /><br />32,000 Sq. I was kinda grumpy about it, especially when I had to stand in the aisle, but more so when this happened:<br />We were making one of those difficult turns down a narrow street where the white line that indicates where oncoming cars should stop at the light is purposefully far back because of the trolley's turn radius. Maybe the woman in the Honda had crept up from the line in her haste to beat the next set of poorly timed/constant red lights in Philly. Or maybe our bus driver didn't take his turn at the perfect angle. Regardless, as we made the turn it became clear that only one of us was going to make it, and we were way, way, way bigger than that brand new midnight blue Honda. She tried to back up but a truck blocked the way. She tried to move over to the right, but was cornered by the curb. Our bus inched forward, closer and closer until the bus and the Honda were parallel, one inch apart, and diagonally blocking the whole street.<br />At this point the truck behind the Honda backed up, drove up onto the sidewalk, and drove down it until it could get back into the street and went on its merry way. But as the passengers around me pointed out, the Honda was pegged.<br />Crazy white lady now earned her rep as crazy white lady in our story. She had the nerve to get out of her car and start yelling at the bus driver. "You left me no room!!!" I heard her yell. One woman in the front yelled back, "He can't yell back at you but I sure as hell can!!!" The woman stomped around, went back to her car, and put her hands on her hips as she imagined her brand new car with a swath of scrape across the entire left side.<br />"Oh I know she is not just standing there with her hands on her hips," one woman commented. At this point people were thinking about getting off the bus, and another bus had already come up behind us. The pressure was on.<br />Our bus driver, with talent and grace, very slowly reversed until the woman could inexpertly, and awkwardly reverse her car, and we drove away with a cheer. I stole a seat from someone who had considered getting off and sat down with a sigh.Juliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05616749566413260365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6660340805811337716.post-49299392222678709802010-10-26T19:17:00.002-07:002010-10-28T18:27:09.777-07:00Philly Ultimate<a href="http://restlessinraleigh.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/istock-ultimate-frisbee.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 446px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 269px; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://restlessinraleigh.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/istock-ultimate-frisbee.jpg" /></a><br /><div>I have done it!! My entire family was in Philly and it was brunch time!! Finding a new brunch place is always a little stressful with the bunch because my dad keeps kosher. That means he eats like a pescatarian when he's out with a meat eater's appetite and desire. I knew I wanted to eat in Fairmont, and while it was risky I chose <a href="http://www.thebelgiancafe.com/">The Belgian Cafe</a>. Why risky? Because they specialize in mussels, a very non-kosher item.<br />We walked from our apartment and by the time we got there everyone was too hungry to care that much about the menu. My dad got the veggie burger which he said was good. The only complaint was that it was drowning in bun. In the bun versus burger battle its always good when both sides are tied, but if one has to have the upper hand I prefer it to be the burger.<br />Josh got the mussels and was very happy. The broth was so good he ordered extra bread to sop it up. Kenny got the Eggs Benedict which came without its ham. The waitress was very apologetic and we were even compted for his meal! My mom, sister and I all ordered the garden fresh eggs which were full of delicious garden fresh items, but overcooked and a little dry. Making up for any problems were the spicy Bloody Marie's, the amazing beer selection, and great service. To top it all off there was a table for six outside and the sun was out. Would I go back? Yes, but without my dad so I can get the mussels!!!!Juliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05616749566413260365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6660340805811337716.post-20779711703601636542010-10-25T15:46:00.000-07:002010-10-25T15:50:34.191-07:00Check out our Familia!!!Check us out at: <a href="http://filmadelphia.org/blog">http://filmadelphia.org/blog</a>. I got to see three movies this year and wish I could have seen many more. The movies were being shown all over Philly, but the three I saw were at the <a href="http://www.landmarktheatres.com/market/philadelphia/ritzfive.htm">Ritz 5</a> on 214 Walnut located right near Penn's Landing (where there are plenty of bars nearby where you can catch a drink before and or after a movie) and the <a href="http://www.princemusictheater.org/">Prince Music Theater</a>.<br /></div><br /><div align="center">What I saw:</div><br /><br /><br /><div align="center">The Man From Nowhere:<br /></div><br /><div align="center">Where this unsuspecting mop top goes from this:<br /></div><br /><p><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 450px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbJMnordY5XGhO6mAayNH6VVgCMtiMKkRgIJRwhhhAqFJYj_aNTtM3YvZiIc8oLhTRgEfP63Nhu6nKmfbmI_CJncaJaebesBzSIN6c5v2S0aSEjmECxAS9sdtMPwYC6TGOO-TFJLS1fmE/s1600/Won_Bin_the_man_from_nowhere.jpg" /> </p><br /><p align="center">to this: </p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://korea.helda.info/wp-content/uploads/The-Man-From-Nowhere.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 461px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 344px; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://korea.helda.info/wp-content/uploads/The-Man-From-Nowhere.jpg" /></a> </div><br /><br /><div align="center">so he can fight drug lords and save her:<br /></div><br /><p><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 335px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 480px; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_PBXauH2nNHo/TBTMgBZt0mI/AAAAAAAABTc/1-yKLGxl1z8/The20Man20from20Nowhere2002_thumb%5B3%5D.jpg?imgmax=800" /><br />The movie was action packed and brilliantly acted by Won Bin who is subtly sexy as he perfectly portrays a special agent turned pawn shop owner who is stalked by a little girl (Kim Saeron) trying to hide from the all too scary world of her stripper/heroin addicted mother. All we need now is some stolen heroin, black market organ selling, funny but well dressed bad guys, and one kidnapping to reveal Bin's ex-identity and all of his amazing fighting moves. He fights his way to the head honchos attempting to rescue Saeron, and your heart will keep racing even after the movie is over. This is a must see.</p><br /><p align="center"><br />El Hombre A Lado (<a href="http://www.indiewire.com/film/the_man_next_door/">The Man Next Door</a>) </p><br /><p align="center">This guy builds a window:<br /></p><br /><p><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 298px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 225px; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://files.list.co.uk/images/t/man-next-door-default-4517.jpg" /> </p><br /><p align="center">The guy on the left gets pissed that someone has the audacity to invade his privacy:<br /></p><a href="http://www.newdirectors.org/2010/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/man_next_door-300x225.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 300px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 225px; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://www.newdirectors.org/2010/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/man_next_door-300x225.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><br /><p align="center">Hilarity ensues including the window guy's finger boot skits:<br /><br /><a href="http://i.indiewire.com/images/uploads/i/mannextdoor.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 225px; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://i.indiewire.com/images/uploads/i/mannextdoor.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><p>This Argentine black comedy was such a joy to watch I was literally slapping my knee for most of the movie (I apologize to all sitting around me). I should preface this by saying that the movie is so Argentine that anyone who has spent at least a month in Argentina will enjoy being taken back to that crazy, twisted land in this epic battle between two neighbors. If you've never been it might not be as meaningful, but it will be funny anyway. The movie begins with a split screen shot showing both sides of a wall as a sledge hammer breaks a hole in it. Peace is shattered for the affluent, snobby family next door who live in a Le Corbusier house made almost entirely of glass. In typical Argentine fashion, the two neighbors dance around the issue using the most Argentine of hand gestures and slang. Any lover of Argentine culture, or anyone who digs an excellent black comedy will regret it when the credits roll on this one. </p><br /><p align="center">And last but not least:</p><br /><p align="center">127 Hours<br /><br /><a href="http://www.overallsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/127_hours_trailer.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 475px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 229px; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://www.overallsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/127_hours_trailer.jpg" /></a><br />This crazy adventurer goes off into the wild without telling anyone where he is going:</p><br /><div align="center"><a href="http://www.ifc.com/news/assets_c/08242010_127hours2.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 457px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 311px; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://www.ifc.com/news/assets_c/08242010_127hours2.jpg" /></a><br />He falls and his hand literally gets stuck between a rock and a hard place down in here:</div><br /><br /><a href="http://www.soundonsight.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/127hours_11.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 465px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 339px; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://www.soundonsight.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/127hours_11.jpg" /></a><br /><br />Do I smell an Oscar? James Franco depicts Aron Rolston and his true story about the time he was stuck in a canon for 127 hours. Rolston is the type of hiker who is all about speed, and beating guide book times with his head phones on. However, he is forced to a stand still when he fatally misjudges the stability of a rock as he jumps down into a canon. Franco's desperation is played so well you can practically smell it, and Danny Boyle's directing turns a movie about a guy who is alone on a canon into captivating film. I had to turn my head away at one of the more gory parts, and the music at the end was a little cheesy if you ask me, but this is one of the best performances of the year if not the past few. When it comes out in November I would recommend catching this one on the big screen so as to take in the beauty of the landscape, and the magnitude of Franco's performance.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.collider.com/wp-content/image-base/Movies/O/One_127_Hours/misc/127_hours_aron_ralston_01.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 470px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 321px; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://www.collider.com/wp-content/image-base/Movies/O/One_127_Hours/misc/127_hours_aron_ralston_01.jpg" /><br /><p align="center"></a></p>Real life Aron Ralston still rocks out!Juliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05616749566413260365noreply@blogger.com1
